Press Release
The Savannah Georgia Power Employee Chapter Brings Hope To Single Moms & Their Children By Donating over $5K in School Supplies Interview Contact: Jennifer Graham, Executive Director, Shelter From the Rain, Inc. P: (912) 232-5860 July 27, 2023 - Savannah, GA – In preparation for the new school year, the Savannah Georgia Power employee chapter donated over $5,000 in school supplies to the single Moms of Shelter From the Rain Inc this week. Multiple Georgia Power teams came together to assemble backpacks at their Savannah location as part of their 100 Days of Summer campaign. School supplies included backpacks loaded with all age appropriate supplies for children in elementary, middle and high school. This outreach will go a long way in helping struggling single mothers who are currently preparing their children to return to school. Within Chatham County, 40% of the households are led by single parents. In the United States, one out of three children live in a single-parent family with 83% of these single-parent families headed by a woman. Single mothers are more likely to experience job displacement, poor academic attainment, live in poverty, and have episodic or chronic depression. The assistance that Georgia Power has provided this year will help with the financial burden of preparing for school for single mothers in Savannah and help set their students up for academic excellence. “This partnership with Georgia Power has allowed us to triple the number of students that we are able to assist with school supplies this year. It is truly amazing to see businesses really put the time and effort into ensuring that the single-parent families in our community have the resources they need to thrive. It means the world to our organization.” states SFTR Executive Director, Jennifer Graham. Established in 2010, Shelter From the Rain is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, based out of Savannah, Georgia, that provides assistance to single Mothers. Their vision is to create a community of strong, economically independent single Mothers through education, mentorship, personal & professional development, homeownership, health and wellness. Throughout the year, the SFTR offers household items, food, school supplies, mentorship, financial literacy, counseling, group support and baby supplies through their diaper bank. # # # Contact: Jennifer T. Many thanks to Reese Cohen who recently invited us to her Bat Mitzvah. As part of Reese’s Mitzvah Project from becoming a Bat Mitzvah, she presented Shelter From the Rain, Inc. with a monetary donation and a donation of diapers for our diaper bank. Reese also shared with us her Talit (prayer shawl) that has her Bubbies (deceased grandmother’s) embroidered butterfly sewn in. An absolutely priceless moment. We are so thankful to God for using this sweet, beautiful, intelligent, young lady to remind us of the significance in the work we do to serve families in need. As well as the importance of kindness and the “power of tzedakah” (Tzedakah: giving to others without expecting anything in return). Thank you, Reese and the Cohen family, for the opportunity to be apart of something so special.
Many thanks to Kim Gusby and WSAV for having us on the Community Corner!

This weekend, I had the opportunity to honor this gorgeous single mom, Tiffani Powers, that was unable to attend our Shelter From the Rain, Inc. Crown-A-Single Mom Awards Breakfast in April. She had triplets last year and she is doing an amazing job. I’m so proud of her and her family. I was also elated that I got the chance to see these adorable babies again. The best! #babyfever #thebest#awesomemoms #queen #babies #triplets #shelterfromtherainsavannah |
