SAVANNAH, GEORGIA (May 9, 2015) – Shelter From the Rain, Inc. held its Second Annual “Crown A Single Mom” Nomination Contest this year. After accepting community nominations to honor and recognize hardworking single mothers in the Coastal Empire, they announced Leomar Guzman, Clevette Donar and Toni Garza as the 2015 winners.
Shelter From the Rain's “Crown A Single Mom” nomination contest is a project under a program called “Queen’s Corner,” which believes that every mother should be treated like a queen and every queen needs someone in her corner. Named after the late Mary Queen Graham, a single mother of twenty-four years, this program is designed to provide emotional support to single mothers. The 2015 nominations listed below highlight why these moms are so special! Leomar Guzman's Nomination “This mom is special, because at 16 she got pregnant, got married and became a single mom. After the baby was born, the father joined the military and decided he didn't want to be a dad. She had family, but she didn't want to dump her responsibilities on anyone. For a week she lived in her car with her young daughter. Everyone told her to just give the baby up or let the baby stay with them until she got on her feet, but she refused. She always knew that she would come out ahead and be a good example to her child. Later, she had three other children and raised them alone. They didn't have everything they wanted, but they had everything that they needed. She was both mother and father while raising exceptional children. To this day, her children come first. She never thinks of herself, but always thinks of how she can assist her kids. This is an unselfish woman who deserves to be queen for a day.” Clevette Donar's Nomination "Mrs. Roberson has endured a life long time of struggle, but never let the struggle defeat her. Ten years ago she had to endure a major brain surgery that caused her some memory loss and some learning disabilities. She was discharged from the military and still had to help care for her new born baby. Over the years, Mrs. Roberson had to re-learn cognitive skills that we learn as babies and that we sometimes take for granted. She has taken disappointment on jobs and has been unable to hold some jobs due to her disabilities. She still holds firm that "No one will provide for my two children, but me." So, she just recently completed her Associates Degree in Accounting. She never lets her disability get the best of her and she always gives me inspiration when I don't have any myself. What a great mother, friend and woman of God. She currently works any job necessary to provide for her two daughters. Her oldest daughter is on the way to college this year. It takes a great mother to do all of this. I salute her and my hat is off." Toni Garza's Nomination "Toni is a single mother of three boys. Her oldest son suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was two years old. This makes it difficult for him to learn some tasks in school. Toni is willing to get him a tutor and she will even give up eating lunch in efforts to pay for the additional help. Toni is always putting her children first and giving up on her needs. She's an inspirational mother and always willing to go the distance for her boys. Because she couldn't afford a computer she would help him by borrowing a laptop to do homework. She really goes above and beyond. She also does the same for anyone in need." We are very grateful for all the inspiring "Crown A Single Mom" nominations and we look forward to honoring more mothers next year! About Shelter From the Rain, Inc. Wilma Parris Grand Nursing Guild of the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons for the beautiful baby supply presentation at the Shell House Seafood Restaurant on Friday, April 24, 2015! Savannah, GA (April 16, 2015) – For the third consecutive year, United Way of the Coastal Empire partnered with Weyerhaeuser employees to distribute more than 41,000 diapers, up from 25,000 last year, to help families who are struggling to provide diapers for their babies.
Diapers were distributed to local non-profit organizations that already have a diaper distribution program in place. The goal is to ensure that every child has enough diapers to remain clean, dry and healthy. In low-income families, a baby can spend a day or longer on one diaper, leading to potential health risks. Safety net programs, such as Food Stamps or Women, Infant and Children (WIC), do not cover diapers, which can cost as much as $100 a month. The agencies receiving diapers were Coastal Pregnancy Center, E-Connect, Economic Opportunity for Savannah-Chatham County Area, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Coastal Georgia, Kicklighter Resource Center, Liberty County Gabriel’s House, Lutheran Services of Georgia, Savannah Area Family Emergency (SAFE) Shelter, Shelter from the Rain, Union Mission, United Way of the Coastal Empire – Bryan County office and Wesley Community Centers of Savannah. United Way is extremely grateful to Weyerhaeuser and its employees for repeatedly reaching out to help our community. Each year, Weyerhaeuser employees contribute to United Way, largely through payroll donations. Last year, Weyerhaeuser employees raised nearly $15,000 for United Way. For more information about Weyerhaeuser’s diapers donation, please contact Trudy Jones at 912.651.7712 or tjones@uwce.org.

Port Wentworth Elementary recently held a food drive for Shelter From the Rain Inc. in support of single mothers throughout the Coastal Empire. Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Tamika M. Wright, the staff and students gathered several food items to help support the effort. The students took great pride in their collection of cereal, noodles, crackers, canned vegetables and various other nonperishable items.
Shelter From the Rain Director, Jennifer T. Graham, was blown away by the generous amount of donations that the school was able to provide in such a small amount of time.
“We were excited to help,” said Teacher and Project Coordinator, Timothy Brown. “The students really enjoyed the idea of helping other children in need.”

“#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”
Shelter From the Rain has become a #GivingTuesday partner to encourage acts of kindness as well as raise awareness for the needs of single mothers and their children. “When you help a single mom, you are helping her children too,” Jennifer T. Graham, Director of Shelter From the Rain, said. “Essentially, you are helping a family in turn bettering your community,”

The “Crown A Single Mom” nomination contest is a project through Shelter From the Rain, Inc. under a program called “Queen’s Corner.” Believing that every mother should be treated like a queen and every queen needs someone in her corner. Named after the late Mary Queen Graham, a single mother of twenty-four years, this program is designed to support single mothers through notes of encouragement, gifts and customized wish list items.
Supporting single mothers is more important than ever. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “more than 40 percent of the babies born in the United States in 2012 were born to single mothers. In 1980, that number was just over 18 percent.”
This Mother's Day, single moms were encouraged by a special gift from Shelter From the Rain. The various nominations were submitted from the community and two exceptional moms were selected for a Mother’s Day gift. The nominations listed below highlight why these moms are so special.
Zipporah Mosley Nomination
"She is raising two amazing well-mannered boys. She works two and three jobs to provide their basic needs. About 2 years ago, her oldest was in a horrible accident that left him unable to walk. Zipporah has put her life on hold to cater to him all while coaching sport teams for her other son."
Tawana Mosley Nomination
"Tawana is special and deserves to be crowned, because God is her ultimate source and supply for her life as she parents her son Leroy. She teaches Leroy the value of believing and trusting God in every area of his life. She is unrelentingly committed to her son's success. As a single Mother, she esteems Leroy's well being above her relationships with the opposite sex. She is a tenured employee and exhibits exceptional work ethics. She does an excellent job of balancing her work and home life. You will always find her supporting Leroy in attendance in his church, school and community activities. Leroy's success as a thirteen year old speaks to Tawana's success as a single Mother. Leroy is an exceptional First Tee of Savannah participant where he was honored in a local Winter Olympics commercial. He is an A student. He plays both basketball and football. Tawana loves life and always exhibit a spirit of love and fun as she finds time to enjoy and be available to family and friends. She is a great cook and loves to share meals with others."
Both Zipporah Mosley and Tawana Parker are wonderful parents and doing a great job as single moms!
