SAVANNAH, GEORGIA (Sunday, April 24, 2016) – Shelter From the Rain, Inc. held its Third Annual “Crown A Single Mom” Nomination Contest this year. After accepting community nominations to honor and recognize hardworking single mothers in the Coastal Empire, they held an Awards Breakfast at the lovely Savannah Coffee Roasters Cafe and Bistro to announced the 2016 winners: Betsy Carver, Sarah Williams and Eartha Pinckney. Shelter From the Rain's “Crown A Single Mom” nomination contest is a project under a program called “Queen’s Corner,” which believes that every mother should be treated like a queen and every queen needs someone in her corner. Named after the late Mary Queen Graham, a single mother of twenty-four years, this program is designed to provide emotional support to single mothers. The 2016 nominations listed below highlight why these moms are so special! Betsy Carver's Nomination “My mom is a single mom. She has a great job and works hard to give my brother and I things we need. We really love her.” Sarah William's Nomination "Sarah is a single Mom of 4 who challenges herself daily to become the best mom. 3 of her 4 children are extremely active athletes, sometimes they play at the same times, yet she has managed not to miss any games. She re-enrolled in college with hopes of finally completing her psychology degree, while also working full-time. She's managed to gain two promotions and established job stability, while training for new positions climbing the corporate ladder. She volunteers with her job delivering meals on wheels and she has worked with seniors who volunteer in our community for 3 years. They absolutely love her. She puts everyone first, second, and third to herself. Her children have always been her priority, and she gives them experiences they enjoy. She's one of a kind, truly a great mom. She's always with her children, and almost never gets the break she deserves, but doesn't complain. She's helped so many people, including a stranger who moved in next door to her with nothing, and 3 children. She was able to furnish her home, children's bedrooms with furniture, kitchen, living room furniture, clothes and shoes for her children, and more solely from donations and asking for help, not for herself, but a total stranger. She took in 2 additional children for almost a year in her home and none of the children ever missed a day of school. She also babysat her neighbors children so that she could work. The list goes on and on. She's a great person and I wish there were more like her." Eartha Pinckney's Nomination "Eartha is a single mom of four whom was homeless just four years ago. Yet she didn't give up. She came into United Way for some assistance, which later landed her part-time employment with 2-1-1. Still many obstacles to overcome she finally was able to get housing through the housing authority of Savannah after about a year of working. She wanted so much better for her children that she went through a home buyers class and purchased her 1st home a year after moving into public housing as well as full-time work. I'm so proud of her growth and willingness to go on no matter what." Thank you for all the inspiring "Crown A Single Mom" nominations and Happy Mother's Day! About Shelter From the Rain, Inc. As founder of ESME (Empowering Solo Moms Everywhere), I’m proud to contribute to the growing trend of single moms supporting one another. At ESME.com, we are guided by the belief that women parenting on their own don’t all have to share the same background, upbringing and circumstances to find connection and offer support. Solo Moms are a diverse group: divorced, widowed, Solo by choice or circumstance such as, a partner’s deployment or incarceration. ESME’s mission is to connect Solo Moms and former Solo Moms, from all walks of life, so that they can offer each other advice, resources, inspiration and maybe a laugh or two. Together we are stronger and wiser.
By honoring the strength and diversity of the Solo Mom community, ESME’s tagline Independent Together comes to life as we set out to redefine single motherhood. When Solo Moms are empowered by mutual support, there’s no place for pity, scorn or blame. It’s time for Solo Moms to bridge our differences, build a strong coalition and demonstrate that single mom families are a valuable part of the American landscape.
